Federal Revenue Service lifts requirement for document authentication
As of July 1, the agency will no longer require that original documents or certified copies be submitted before providing its services
Published on June 15, the RFB Normative Instruction No. 2,088/2022 has lifted, indefinitely, the requirement imposed on taxpayers to submit original documents or certified copies before requesting services or information from the Revenue Service. The regulation goes into effect on July 1.
For as long as the rule is in effect, simple copies of documents can be submitted in-person at a physical office or sent digitally. According to a note issued by the agency, the measure contributes to simplifying access to its services.
It is worth pointing out, however, that taxpayers are still required to safekeep the originals, since the Revenue Service can request them at any time.
The agency also stated that the documents’ veracity will be attested by checking the seals or authenticity codes of documents issued by other agencies, and comparing them against the Federal Revenue's own databases and cooperation agreements, via telephone calls or electronic communication, among other ways.
