Digital Certificate: Attention to Changes Announced by ICP-Brasil
Discontinuation of Models and Creation of New Digital Certificate Types Among the Changes
ICP-Brasil, responsible for regulating digital certificates in the country, recently announced significant changes related to the types of digital certificates.
Starting in 2025, the changes will affect both companies and individuals who rely on these devices in their daily activities, introducing new models, discontinuing existing standards, and adjusting security policies.
As a Registration Authority (RA) accredited for issuing and renewing digital certificates, Domingues e Pinho Contadores explains the key points.
New Types of Digital Certificates and Discontinuation of Models
Among the changes, the introduction of electronic seal certificates and certificates for specific applications stands out, addressing modern demands for authentication and security. The resolution also discontinued some widely used standards, such as the A1 model for individuals.
Learn about the main types now, including those that remain valid and those recently introduced:

Impacts on the End User
Certification authorities and registration authorities must comply with a series of new standards, but the end user needs to focus on a few simpler aspects.
See below:
- Digital certificates currently serving legal entities (e-CNPJ and e-PJ) will be discontinued and replaced by the electronic seal, which will not include data about the legal representative.
- The electronic seal functions as a type of "digital stamp" and cannot be used for document signing.
- Document signing must necessarily be done using a personal digital signature certificate.
- Companies will need two types of certificates: one for system access and issuing invoices (electronic seal) and another for document signing (e-CPF).
- The electronic seal is expected to become available in the second half of 2025.
- Digital certificates of types A1, A2, A3, A4, S1, S2, S3, S4, T3, and T4, issued before the resolution date (11/07/2024), may continue to be issued and used until March 2029.
- Registration agents remain responsible for validating data for certificate issuance and renewal.
Users need to stay aware of the validity of their devices and always rely on a trusted Registration Authority for support when necessary. After all, certificates are essential for ensuring the security of operations for individuals and businesses in the digital world.
