Digital certificate: why does it expire? Precautions and renewal procedures
A digital certificate is a company’s greatest ally for ensuring security, but precautions should be taken in its use
Every digital certificate has an expiration date and users should keep that in mind to avoid setbacks when using this tool, which is pivotal in an electronic environment.
As a general rule, certificates are valid from one to three years, depending on the type. After a certain time, the certificate expires and can no longer be used.
Digital certificates validity periods
There are two types of certificate, with varying validity periods:
A1 |
A3 |
Digital file installed on user's computer Valid for 1 year |
Stored on cryptographic media (smart card or token) Valid for 1, 2 or 3 years |
Renewal of digital certificates: why it is important
The validity period of a digital certificate is a means of ensuring the use of a version that is always up-to-date in terms of technology, allowing for safe authentication and the secure exchange of information on the internet.
Upon renewal, a new cryptographic key is generated, which, in a way, also "renews" security. It is also important to ensure that the owner’s data stored in the device is constantly updated.
Renewing digital certificates is essential for individuals and companies to avoid setbacks, such as delaying court procedures, being unable to carry out online transactions or issuing invoices, etc.
How to renew digital certificates
To renew a digital certificate, one must refer to a Registration Authority (RA), such as Domingues e Pinho Contadores. Renewals must be performed before the expiration date, as once the certificate expires, it will be necessary to request a new one, following the procedures for issuance, which require more time and resources.
This process is quite simple. Check it out: Digital Certificate: renewal and issuance in 5 steps
Safety tips
To maintain the security of your digital certificate, some precautions should be taken, such as the following:
- Only issue or renew a digital certificate with a reliable Registration Authority, accredited by ICP-Brasil;
- Create strong passwords to protect private keys. Avoid obvious passwords and do not share them with third parties;
- Users must protect their digital certificates and passwords, regardless of whether the certificate is stored on a token, smart card or in the user's own device;
- In case a digital certificate is lost or compromised, you should report the fact to the certificate authority, so that you can be given instructions on security procedures
By following the tips above and by renewing your digital certificate on a regular basis, you will ensure that your online transactions remain secure.
