Jaé: Rio de Janeiro's ticketing changes will impact companies

Jaé, the new ticketing platform for public transportation in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, already has a set date to fully replace RioCard: starting February 1, 2025, it will be the only system accepted on the city’s light rail (VLT), BRT, vans, kombis, and buses.

Since 2023, Jaé has been operating in parallel with the RioCard, but companies and users need to be aware of the end of the coexistence of both ticketing systems across all modes of transportation in the state. To ensure a smooth transition, registration on the Jaé system should be completed as soon as possible.

In which transportation modes will Jaé be mandatory?

In all public transportation systems in the city of Rio – including buses, BRTs, VLTs, legal vans, and kombis.

Will the Jaé be accepted in the subway, trains, or ferries?

No, because the Jaé will be exclusive to municipal transportation. Trains, subways, and ferries are the responsability of the state.

Does Jaé integrate with the intercity ticket?

Users who utilize integration between transport systems will not lose this benefit, but starting in February 2025, they will need to have two cards: Jaé and RioCard. To ensure the integration benefit, the RioCard must be used for state-managed transportation modes and the Jaé for municipally controlled transportation.

Do Jaé credits expire?

If the Jaé card is linked to the app, the credits do not expire. However, if the card is not linked, after 12 months of inactivity, the credits will be reverted to the Municipal Transport Department.

 Points of Attention

The RioCard remains valid for use on state-managed transportation.
Those traveling between municipalities or using public transportation in both networks, municipal and state, will need both cards (Jaé and RioCard).
Companies must calculate the corresponding balance for both the Jaé and RioCard to deposit transportation allowances for their employees.
The balance on the RioCard cannot be transferred to the Jaé and vice versa. The systems are independent.
The RioCard balance can be used on municipal transportation until January 31, 2025.
